Joseph Staples, who served as an assistant coach for the University of Maine at Farmington’s men’s and women’s cross country teams during the fall of 2012, was named the head coach on January 24, 2013, by athletics director Julie Davis.

Staples replaced former head coach Sarah Doscinski, who stepped down to spend more time with her family and her business, Spandits.

“Joe did a wonderful job working with our cross country teams this past fall, and I believe he is ready for this next step in his career,” said Davis. “He has been able to relate very well with our student-athletes, and they, in turn, were supportive of keeping him with the UMF cross country program. Joe embraces the values of both UMaine-Farmington and Division III, and I am confident he will do very well in this new capacity.”

Staples previously served as an assistant coach at Mt. Blue High School during the Spring of 2012, and will serve in that capacity again for Spring 2013. He has worked with youth track and field with both the Farmington Recreation Department and the Sandy River Track Club.

A Farmington native and graduate of Mt. Blue High School, Staples earned All-Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference and All-State honors in both cross country and the 4x400m relay during the outdoor track season. He competed in cross country at the collegiate level for one season at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Staples graduated from the University of Maine in Orono in May 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in marine biology.
