Sykes and Welzel among top 10 at Runnin’ Monks Invite

STANDISH, Maine – University of Maine at Farmington senior Salena Sykes finished sixth while first year runner Farren Welzel was seventh to lead the Beavers to a second place finish at the Saint Joseph's College Runnin' Monks Invitational on Saturday.

Sykes finished the 5000m course in 22:29, while Welzel posted a time of 22:51. Rachel Huber was 13th with a time of 23:27, and Amelia Tacheny was 16th with a mark of 24:10.

Overall, the Beavers finished with 67 points in the event, and were just five points behind meet champions and host Saint Joseph's College with 62 points.  Emerson College was third with 74 points, while the University of New England was fourth with 75.

Lasell (118 pts.), UMaine-Machias (153 pts.), Johnson State (174 pts.), and Thomas College (192 pts.) rounded out the field.

UMF women's cross country will compete at the Maine Collegiate Championships next Saturday, Oct. 13. That meet is hosted by the University of Southern Maine.
