BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Salena Sykes (Island Pond, Vt./North Country Union) finished 29th overall out of a field of 125 runners, pacing the University of Maine at Farmington women's cross country team to a seventh place finish at Saturday's University of New England Invitational.
Sykes finished with a time of 22:54. As a team, UMF recorded 209 points to finish seventh at the season-opening event. Six University of Southern Maine runners were among the top eight finishers of the meet, propelling USM to a first-place finish with 21 points.
After Sykes, freshman Farren Welzel (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) was UMF's next highest finisher in 52nd place, posting a time of 24:07. Junior Rachel Huber (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) was 56th overall (24:20) while freshman Amelia Tacheny (Dixfield, Maine/Dirigo) was 59th (24:25). Junior Keeley Cronin (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) rounded out the list of top finishers for the women, placing 70th with a time of 25:00.
UMaine-Farmington will host the next meet on the schedule, the UMF Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Mt. Blue High School in Farmington. The women's race will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the men's race at 12:00 p.m.
