Women's volleyball breezes by Johnson State in first round

FARMINGTON --The third-seeded University of Maine at Farmington women's volleyball team advanced to the North Atlantic Conference championship round with 3-0 first-round victory over No. 6 Johnson State today at Dearborn Gymnasium. The set scores went 25-14, 25-19, 25-9.

The Beavers (9-12) are scheduled to face No. 2 Husson University in the semifinals Friday at 8 p.m. at Maine Maritime Academy. The Badgers closed out their season at 3-18.

Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) powered the Beavers with 16 kills and a .737 hitting percentage (16-2-19). Mitchell also led Farmington on service with eight aces. Emily Beebe (Bristol, R.I.) and Jen Vadnais (Arundel, Maine) each scored five kills in the win, while Katie Allen (Bucksport, Maine) passed around 25 assists and Katie Melanson (Westmoreland, N.H.) collected a match-high 13 digs.

Chelsea Vaillancourt (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) led the Badgers with six kills with Jessica Pafumi (Monson, Mass.) supplying five. Kylie Van Etten (Montrose, Pa.) provided team bests of 12 assists and five digs in defeat.
