Women's volleyball's rally comes up short

FARMINGTON --The University of Maine at Farmington women's volleyball team rallied for a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set, but the University of Southern Maine held off the Beavers for the 3-2 (26-24, 25-15, 20-25, 24-26, 15-6) win in non-conference action at Dearborn Gymnasium this afternoon.

The Beavers (1-4) are slated to host the University of Maine at Machias Saturday at 2 p.m. The Huskies (2-7) are tabbed to take on the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and Worcester State College in Gorham on Saturday.

Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.Y.) powered the Huskies to the victory with 20 kills and a .425 hitting percentage (20-3-40). Hallie Noah (Anchorage, Alaska) pitched in with nine kills, 21 assists and 11 service aces, while Samantha Ellis (Westerly, R.I.) collected 12 digs.

Shuttle had three kills as the Huskies had seven kills with one error in 16 attempts in the deciding game.

Emily Beebe (Bristol, R.I.) led the Beavers with nine kills and 11 digs followed by Katie Allen (Bucksport, Maine) with 10 digs and 21 assists and Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) with seven kills, six service aces and four total blocks.
