BIDDEFORD, Maine - University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball (0-1) dropped the season opener 83-46 to the University of New England (2-0) on Friday night at Harold Alfond Forum.
The Nor'easters placed four players in double figures in the win. Sadie Nelson led UNE with 15 points, Ashley Coneys added 12, Alicia Brown dropped in 11, and Kristie McNall reached double figures with 10. The Beavers were led by Morgan Crocker (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay) with nine points and seven rebounds, Cheyenne Malloy (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan) added 8.
UNE jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, forcing nine turnovers and outscoring UMF 23-10. UNE extended the lead to 35 points by halftime with a 29 point second quarter. Nelson had nine of her game-high 15 in the quarter, McNall added 7. Crocker scored five of the seven points for UMF in the quarter.
UMF responded in the third quarter by almost doubling its total score with 16 points. Malloy scored six, Abby Hasson (South Portland, Maine/South Portland), Haley Felkel (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) both added three to give the Beavers momentum heading into the final quarter. UNE put the game away, outscoring UMF 19-13 in the fourth for the final margin of victory.
Paige Carter (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and scored five points for the Beavers.
UMaine-Farmington is slated for the 1 p.m. consolation game. UNE will await the winner between Regis College (Mass.) and Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) for Saturday's 3 p.m. event final.
