NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Southern Maine defeated Maine Farmington, 73-45, in the second game of the 2012 UMass Dartmouth Basketball Classic, presented by the Fairfield Inn & Suites, at the Tripp Athletic Center Friday.
Southern Maine never trailed in the contest as senior Nicole Garland drilled a three pointer to start the game and the Huskies were off and running.
The Huskies led by as many as 18 points in the first half. The Beavers would get as close as 41-29 at 16:51 in the second half but Southern Maine would blow the game wide open with a 20-4 run in the span of just under six minutes to take a commanding 61-33 lead with just under eleven minutes to play.
The Huskies out-rebounded the Beavers 43-33 including 16-7 on the offensive glass. A strong Southern Maine defense forced Maine Farmington into 25 turnovers while holding them to 34% from the field.
Junior forward Holly Oliver (Belgrade Lakes, Maine/Messalonskee) was the only Beaver in double digits with 14 points. Senior Kenni Norton (Strong, Maine/Mt. Abram) charted nine points, while senior Rachel Clement (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) finished with seven points and dished out four assists.
USM's Garland led all scorers with a game-high 18 points. Senior forward Haley Jordan and junior guard Mariah Callender joined her in double-figures with 10 points apiece. Huskies sophomore forward Rebecca Knight led the way on the boards, pulling down 10 rebounds.
Southern Maine improved to 1-0 with the victory, while UMaine-Farmington fell to 0-1 with the defeat. Southern Maine will play Rivier in the second round of the tournament at 2:00 p.m. Saturday. UMaine-Farmington will play UMass Dartmouth at 12 noon Saturday.
