FARMINGTON, Maine -- Castleton State College held the University of Maine at Farmington to 21.3 percent shooting as the Spartans stifled the Beavers for a 67-32 victory in the North Atlantic Conference women's basketball openers for both squads.
The Spartans ran their record to 4-1 overall (1-0 NAC) and are scheduled to face Thomas College Saturday in Waterville at 3 p.m. The Beavers (1-5, 0-1) are tabbed to take on Green Mountain College in NAC play Saturday at 3 p.m.
Alyssa Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) led Castleton with 13 points, while Vanessa Powers (Marshfield, Vt.) contributed 12 points and Stephanie Bull (Milton, Vt.) turned in 10 points. The Spartans netted 42 points in the paint and took advantage of 27 UMF turnovers with 28 points. Heather Murdough (Hillsboro, N.H.) was the game's top rebounder with 10 caroms.
Lindsay Ranquist (Owls Head, Maine) tallied nine points for the Beavers with Paige Saunders (Surry, Maine) providing nine rebounds and three blocked shots. UMF connected on 13 of its 61 shots, including 1-14 (7.1 percent) from 3-point range.
The Beavers and Spartans slogged through the opening nine minutes with a combined 17 turnovers and Castleton clinging to a 14-13 edge before the visitors tore off on an 18-0 run. Bolognani powered the run with seven points with Jaques and Leonard each adding a pair of baskets as UMF was kept quiet offensively for more than eight minutes as the Spartans stormed out to a 32-13 advantage. A Saunders basket ended the drought, but the Beavers trailed 32-15 at the half.
The Spartans pumped up their cushion to 43-18 with an 11-3 stretch over the first 5:54 out of the intermission. Layups by Powers on two straight possessions finalized the run. Castleton led 56-30 with 6:45 to play before finishing off the Beavers with an 11-0 run over the next 5:27 on its way to the 67-32 rout.
