Women's basketball can't catch up with Husson

BANGOR -- Husson University copped a 73-61 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in North Atlantic Conference women's basketball action tonight at Newman Gymnasium.

The Beavers (11-12 overall, 8-5) -- who had a four-game winning streak snapped -- are scheduled to close out their regular season at Maine Maritime Saturday at 4 p.m. The Eagles improved to 13-11 (11-2).

Kenni Norton (Strong, Maine) scored 16 points to lead Farmington, while Ashley Busque (Belgrade, Maine) pitched in 15 points and Paige Saunders (Surry, Maine) collected 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Kelli Murray (Fairfield, Maine) headed the Eagles' effort with 16 points and 13 rebounds with Bethany Sevey (Skowhegan, Maine) chipping in 13 points and Marissa Albert (Fort Kent, Maine) throwing in 11 points.

Behind seven points from Noelle Lincoln (Dixmont, Maine), Husson hopped out to a 16-8 lead over the first 6:11. The Eagles led 19-14 four minutes later, but Jillian Ross (Belfast, Maine) knocked down a pair of threes and Holly Oliver (Belgrade Lakes, Maine) added a 3-pointer for a 23-19 advantage for the Beavers with 9:11 left until intermission.

Farmington's lead was short-lived as Albert scored five points to lead the Eagles on a 7-0 stretch for a 26-23 lead with 5:40 to play. From Oliver's three, the Beavers were held without a field goal for more than seven minutes and Husson took a 37-29 lead into intermission.

The Beavers stayed within a single possession in the first four minutes of the second half, but back-to-back buckets by Murray and Amanda Gifford (Lee, Maine) gave the Eagles a 45-38 lead. Farmington chiseled the lead down to 52-49 with 8:16 to play, but Husson again responded with five straight points to keep its distance.

Highlighted by five points from Murray and pair of Sevey treys, the Eagles used an 11-2 run to put the contest away with a 69-56 lead with 1:54 remaining on their way to the 73-61 win.
