Women's basketball bottled up at Bates

LEWISTON -- Bates College handed University of Maine at Farmington its fourth straight loss as the Bobcats took an 86-56 non-conference women's basketball victory over the Beavers tonight.

Farmington (0-4) is scheduled to host Rivier College Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Beavers' home opener.

Kenni Norton (Strong, Maine) led Farmington with 12 points. Jillian Ross (Belfast, Maine) added eight points, while Ashley Busque (Belgrade, Maine) added seven points. The Beavers turned the ball over 30 times, leading to 39 points for the Bobcats.

After Holly Oliver (Belgrade Lakes, Maine) hit a pair of free throws to get the Beavers to 11-9 with 15:39 left in the opening half, Bates reeled off the next 16 points to post a 27-9 command with 12:55 left in the first. A Norton three ended the run, but the Bobcats rolled into halftime with a 50-29 lead.

The Bobcats led by as much as 35 points in the second in taking the 86-56 victory.

Annie Burns led five Bobcats in double figures in points with 13 and also passed out eight assists followed by Meredith Kelly and Christine McCall with 12 points each and Lauren Dobish and Jessie Iboe at 10 points apiece.
