Rose and Björk lead UMF at Sunday River giant slalom

NEWRY, Maine – University of Maine at Farmington freshman Maria Bjoerk (Falun, Sweden) and sophomore Alex Rose (Fayette, Maine) paced the UMF ski team at Sunday's USCSA Thompson Division giant slalom events at the Sunday River ski resort.

Bjoerk finished third overall in the event with a combined time of 2:25.28, trailing a competitor from Tufts and a "B" team skier from the University of New Hampshire. Bjoerk's second run time of 1:10.96 was the fastest women's time on the course all day.

Freshman Lindsay Jacques (Jay, Maine) was fourth overall with a time of 2:26.40, while junior Meghan Donovan (Westborough, Mass.) was 32nd overall with a time of 3:04.58.

In the men's GS event, Rose was fifth overall with a time of 2:20.98, but three of the four competitors ahead of him were "B" team skiiers from the University of New Hampshire, the University of Vermont, and Bates College. Senior Josh Cooley (Vassalboro, Maine) was 20th overall with a time of 2:31.86, followed by freshman Dean Ellis (Farmington, Maine) in 25th place overall with a mark of 2:35.21.

UMaine-Farmington will compete against USCSA Reynolds Division teams next Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12-13, at the Mt. Abram ski hill in Greenwood, Maine.
