Fogarty’s Walk-Off Gives UMF a Sweep Over UMPI

FARMINGTON, Maine -- University of Maine at Farmington softball (3-12) sophomore Margaret Fogarty (Auburn, Maine/St. Johnsbury Academy) hit a walk-off single in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader with the University of Maine at Presque Isle (22-11) as the Beavers swept the non-conference twinbill.

UMF shutout UMPI in the first contest 2-0 and Fogarty's hit gave UMF a 2-1 win in the afternoon's finale.

Fogarty's dramatic hit was set up with a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh. With one out in the inning, Meryl Bond (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy) reached on an UMPI error and then moved up to second after Kylie Cunningham (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) followed with a single to left field.

With two outs in the inning and facing a full count, Fogarty slapped a single in between the second baseman and right fielder as Bond came home to score for the winning run.

Emily Vitone (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) only threw 63 pitches for the complete game win. The senior yielded zero earned runs on seven hits.

In the first game, the scoreboard read all zeros before Cunningham singled home a run in the bottom of the third inning.

The score stood until the Beavers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Kiana Thompson (Industry, Maine/Mt. Blue) lined an RBI single to right field.

Kailyn Hill (Lisbon, Maine/Lisbon) threw complete game shutout and only surrendered four hits in the outing.

Cunningham finished the afternoon 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

UMaine-Farmington returns to conference action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Husson at Prescott Field.
