CLERMONT, Fla. – University of Maine at Farmington softball (1-10) fell to Millikin College (9-6) on the final day of its trip to the PFX Invitational with a 10-1 non-conference loss on Friday morning in non-conference action.
UMF had its chances early in the Millikin contest but could not cash in with runners in scoring position. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Kiana Thompson (Industry, Maine/Mt. Blue) laid down a bunt single and eventually stole second. The Beavers continued their aggressive base running as Thompson tried to steal another bag, but could not slide under the tag and was thrown out at third base.
Farmington produced a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Haley Felkel (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) got hit by a pitch to start the rally and then the Beavers loaded the bases with back-to-back singles by Ashley Gleason (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) and Meryl Bond (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy). Margaret Fogarty (Auburn, Maine/St. Johnsbury Academy) came through with a productive out by grounding out to first base, but Felkel came home to score.
In the top of the sixth inning, Felkel and Gleason lined base hits and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. With no outs, the Beavers could not come through with the clutch hit to plate another run.
The top three hitters in the lineup (Felkel, Gleason, and Bond) combined to hit 4-for-8 with a run scored.
UMaine-Farmington was originally scheduled to play Grinnell College on Friday, but the contest was cancelled due to lightning storms. The Beavers return to the diamond on Wednesday with a trip to Colby.
