CLERMONT, Fla. – University of Maine at Farmington softball (1-5) dropped a pair in a day-night doubleheader on Monday at the PFX Invitational in non-conference action. The Beavers lost 8-1 in the first game of the day to Lawrence University (4-1) and then 11-0 to Hamilton College (5-7) in the nightcap.
In the first game, Lawrence plated the first run of the game with two outs in the top of the second inning. UMF answered two innings later when Alison Hamilton (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) started the rally with a leadoff double to center field. Two batters later, Meryl Bond (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy) came through by reaching on a fielder's choice and Hamilton touched home plate to tie the game at 1-1.
Lawrence retook the lead for good with three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth and then put the game out of reach with four more runs in the seventh inning.
Kailyn Hill (Lisbon, Maine/Lisbon) started in the circle for UMF and pitched five innings. Hill yielded two earned runs on four hits and struck out four Vikings.
In the meeting with Hamilton, the Beavers missed out on a few scoring opportunities in the early innings. Kiana Thompson (Industry, Maine/Mt. Blue) drew a two-out walk and then advanced 60 feet with a stolen base on the next pitch. Thompson moved over to third on a passed ball but was left stranded by the end of the inning.
Bond singled to lead off the fourth inning and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. After Thompson drew another two-out walk, UMF left both runners on base at the end of the frame.
In the fifth inning, Haley Felkel (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) belted a one-out double and then hustled all the way to third on the relay throw. Felkel tried to get a little too aggressive on the base paths and was picked off by Hamilton catcher Liz Brautigam.
Bond finished the day 2-for-5 with an RBI and one extra base hit. Felkel finished 2-for-6 and lined one extra-base hit as well.
