Softball Splits Doubleheader with UMPI; Fowler Nearly Pitches a No-No

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team opened the season by splitting a doubleheader with the University of Maine at Presque Isle with a, 6-3, victory in the first game and losing, 8-3, in the second contest in non-conference action.

The games were played in the Mahaney Dome on the campus of the University of Maine.

The Beavers rallied in the first inning with four runs. Shelby Bryant (So. Portland, Maine) led off the inning with an infield single. Three batters later after Bryant stole second and Meryl Bond (Jefferson, Maine) reached on an error, Bond stole second but UMPI tried to catch Bryant off guard at third. The throw sailed into left field and Bryant was able to trot home.

Kennadi Grover (Cushing, Maine) hit a mishandled grounder to the shortstop, bringing Bond to the plate, and then Jennifer Garrard (Wilmington, Maine) followed with two-run home run to deep centerfield. UMF added to its lead in the second inning with two more runs. Bond drove home a run with a double and Hannah Lust (Bangor, Maine) singled to right center, and then Bond scored the Beavers' final run of the game.

Courtney Fowler (Greensboro, N.C.) pitched four hitless innings before surrendering a single in the top of the fifth inning. Fowler pitched a complete game with six strikeouts and did not give up an earned run.  

In game two, the Owls came out swinging and putting the ball in play with quality line drives. The Beavers surrendered three unearned runs in the top of the first but managed to get one back in their own turn at-bat. With the bases loaded, Lust grounded into a tag-them-out, throw-them-out double play but Bryant was able to score easily.

The Owls rolled with their momentum in the second inning with four more runs. A pair of singles, a double, and a fielding error allowed UMPI to take control of the game.

UMF got a run back in the in the bottom of the second and fourth inning but could not get any more offensive production.

Kristen Manzo (Millinocket, Maine) started on the mound for UMF and gave up two earned runs in three nearly two innings. In relief, Abby Burdin (Guilford, Maine) struck out two batters and surrendered one run in her collegiate debut after pitching 4 1/3 solid innings.

UMaine-Farmington starts a six game non-conference road trip on Monday, March 30. The Beavers will play a doubleheader at Gordon College starting at 3:00 p.m.
