Beavers stopped by Polar Bear pitching in sweep

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team wrapped up its regular season with a pair of losses to Bowdoin College, 8-2 and 6-0, in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Pickard Field.

UMaine-Farmington heads into this weekend's North Atlantic Conference Tournament with a 14-12 record. Bowdoin improved to 24-12 as it begins play in the NESCAC Tournament on Friday.

The Beavers recorded just six hits in each of the two games, with sophomore Emily Soule lead Farmington at the plate with three hits.

In the first game, Cielle Collins got Bowdoin started with a RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on a bases loaded opportunity.

The Beavers looked to break through in their following at bat with runners on second and third with only one out, but Julia Geaumont battled back for consecutive strikeouts to close the inning. Back to back doubles in the bottom of the third put Bowdoin on top 2-0 after Nicole Nelson drove Emily Griffin in from second. Collins tacked on another RBI for the team's fifth straight hit of the inning, followed by a two run double to center from Siena Mitman.

Adriane Krul and Nelson added to the Polar Bears' run total with a RBI each in the bottom of the fifth.

The Beavers put a pair of runs on the board in the sixth as Kennadi Grover doubled to right and Jillian Withee singled to the same spot. Half of Farmington's six hits came in the sixth.

Mitman closed out the game for Bowdoin with a solo shot to straightaway center in the bottom of the sixth.

With just three outs separating the Polar Bears from the win, Emily Griffin stepped in to fan all three batters she faced.

Geaumont started the day for Bowdoin, completing two innings of work with two strikeouts and as many hits. Alana Luzzio and Emily Griffin completed the remaining five innings in relief, combining for eight strikeouts.

Bowdoin got its first run of the second game on the board in the opening inning off a sacrifice fly by Nicole Nelson. A big fourth inning put three more runs up for Bowdoin, beginning with a two run single off the bat of Luzzio. Krul later fouled out deep in left field, allowing Collins to tag up and advance home.

The Polar Bears offense continued to produce in the fifth as Katie Gately collected an RBI double. Gately eventually came around to score as Marisa O'Toole flied out to center.

Soule and Amy Jones each had two hits to pace the Beavers in game two.

Kristen Manzo pitched six innings for the Beavers with seven hits and three earned runs. The freshman hurler walked four and earned one strikeout on her way to the loss.

Griffin pitched three innings for Bowdoin, collecting one strikeout while allowing two walks and three hits. Melissa DellaTorre finished out the game by allowing three hits while fanning seven.

UMaine-Farmington will open the NAC Tournament on Friday, May 2, at 2:00 p.m. when the third-seeded Beavers face fourth-seeded Thomas College.
