BRUNSWICK, Maine – Bowdoin College's Gen Barlow hit a pair of home runs as the Polar Bears swept the University of Maine at Farmington in a weekday softball doubleheader on Tuesday at Pickard Field.
Bowdoin won the opening game 5-1 behind a one-hit pitching performance by the Bears' Tricia Thibodeau, while Melissa DellaTorre pitched Bowdoin to a 12-6 victory in the second game. The wins extended Bowdoin's winning streak to seven games and improved the Polar Bears to 20-9, while UMaine-Farmington fell to 9-11.
The Beavers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the opening game following an RBI single to left by Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine/Mt. Blue).
Bowdoin answered an inning later. Siena Mitman laid down a two out bunt and beat the throw to load first base. Cielle Collins followed with a double to straight away center that allowed Mitman to come home. DellaTorre stepped up with an RBI single to right, scoring Collins.
Bowdoin was able to tack on another run with a lead-off solo shot from Barlow. The Polar Bears next major scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the sixth as Collins and Hanna Wurgaft hit back-to-back singles. Adriane Krul's walk loaded the bases. Barlow hit a two-out single which scored the runners from second and third, before getting caught in a run-down between first and second to end the inning. Bowdoin finished off the Beavers with a1-2-3 seventh.
Farmington scored a pair of runs to open the second game. Following Amy Jones' (Augusta, Maine/Cony) leadoff walk, the Beavers continued to move their runner with a sacrifice bunt and single up the middle from Haley Berry (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook). Berry stole second, drawing the throw, and allowing Jones to score. She continued to third as the catcher was tangled up with Jones at the plate. Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) knocked down an RBI single before Bowdoin could end the inning.
The Beavers would double their run-count in the second with an RBI single from Berry, and a pair of runs off Bartlett's double. The Beavers wouldn't score again until the seventh.
After only scoring one run in the opening inning, the Polar Bears went on to score 11 additional runs. Katie Gately and Nicole Nelson each had a double, while collecting a pair of RBI's. Barlow knocked out her second homerun of evening, a two run shot, as well as a RBI single. Victoria Rusch also collected a pair of RBI's in the second and fourth innings. Julia Geaumont's chipper to second also scored a run for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin combined for 12 hits in six innings to collect the win.
