Beavers hold Castleton to just four hits in game one win

FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team posted a 4-1 win over Castleton State College behind a four-hit pitching performance by lefthander Emily Soule (Chelsea, Maine/Cony), taking a split out a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Prescott Field.

The Beavers fell to the Spartans 7-0 in game two, finishing the day 8-7 overall, 6-6 in the NAC and in fifth place in the conference standings. Castleton State improved to 11-17 overall, 8-4 in conference play.

Farmington posted a pair of runs in the second inning on a hit-by-pitch, a fielder's choice, and an error, allowing Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) and Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine/Mt. Blue) to cross.

The Beavers plated two more in the fourth on RBI singles from Jillian Withee (Salem Township, Maine/Mt. Abram) and Meryl Bond (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy).  Castleton recovered one of those runs in the top of the sixth Jessica Babcock's (Fairfax, Vt.) sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Chelsea Crehan (Essex, Conn.).

Soule struck out four Spartans and issued three walks on her way to the win, improving to 5-1 on the season. Castleton starter Taylor Lively (Greenfield, Mass.) yielded two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk in the loss.

Withee and Bryant each had a pair of hits for the Beavers in game one, while Crehan recorded a double for the Spartans.

In game two, Babcock belted a one-out two-run home run in the top of the first to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.

That score held through the fourth inning, and Castleton State added single runs in the fifth and sixth. A three-run uprising in the top of the seventh, keyed by Melissa Halloran's (Oakdale, Conn.) two-run single up the middle, helped seal the win for the Spartans.

Lively scattered five Farmington hits in the complete game shutout win, with five strikeouts against three walks. UMaine-Farmington starter Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) went six complete innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits, striking out nine but issuing seven walks. Anna Piggott (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) came on in the seventh to close out the game.

Bond and Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine/Cony) each had two hits for Farmington. Babcock was 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI for Castleton State, while Melissa Halloran was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.

UMaine-Farmington returns to action on Monday, April 15, when it faces Bates College in a Patriot's Day doubleheader. First pitch of the twinbill is slated for 3:30 p.m. Castleton State will host Union College on Tuesday, April 16, at 3:30 p.m.
