FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team pounded out 29 runs on 25 hits in a doubleheader sweep of North Atlantic Conference foe Green Mountain College, Saturday afternoon at Prescott Field. The Beavers took the first game, 16-0 in five innings, and completed the day with a 13-4 five-inning win in game two.
UMaine-Farmington (7-6, 5-5 NAC) starter Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) fanned five Green Mountain batters while pitching a five-inning no-hitter against the Eagles to improve to 2-5. Vaillancourt faced 16 batters, losing the perfect game bid by issuing a walk to GMC's Amber Heath with two outs in the top of the fifth.
Offensively, the Beavers posted eight runs in the first inning of game one, with two-run singles by Hannah Lust (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) and Jillian Withee (Salem Township, Maine/Mt. Abram) and a three-run triple off the bat of Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine/Hermon).
UMF added a single run in the second and put up seven runs in the third to complete their scoring. Freshman Meryl Bond (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy) belted a two-run double to left center, and Barry stroke a double into left center for two more runs.
Barry hit three-quarters of the cycle with a single, a double, and a triple in her four at bats, and finished with five runs batted in and two runs scored. Bond, Lust, and Haley Berry (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) each had two hits and three RBI.
Heather yielded 16 earned runs on 11 hits and nine walks over her four innings in the circle for Green Mountain, striking out one Beaver batter.
In game two, Farmington plated eight runs in the first inning on six hits and two Green Mountain errors. Junior Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine/Cony) doubled twice in the first, including a two-run shot into left field. Emily Soule (Chelsea, Maine/Cony) and Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine/Mt. Blue) each crushed triples in the first inning.
Bartlett slammed a solo home run to left center field to open the Farmington second, as the Beavers scored three more runs on four hits. Dayle Jordan (Greene, Maine/St. Dominic) pushed UMF's second run across on a sac fly to center, and Devin Fitzgerald (Casco, Maine/Lake Region) doubled through the right side for the Beavers' third run of the frame.
Green Mountain posted single runs in the first and third, with Hayley Provost lacing a single into right center for the RBI in the third. The Eagles put up two unearned runs in the top of the fifth, thanks largely to two Farmington errors.
Farmington starter Anna Piggott (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) tossed the five-inning complete game win, allowing just one earned run on three hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Green Mountain's Chelsea Paul surrendered 13 runs, 10 earned, on 14 hits and two walks over her four complete innings in the circle, and took the loss.
UMaine-Farmington hosts Castleton State at noon on Sunday, April 14, on Prescott Field, while Green Mountain will face Thomas College in an NAC doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
