HENNIKER, N.H. – Third-seeded New England College topped the No. 6 University of Maine Farmington 5-3 in North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal action this afternoon.
The Beavers finished their 2012 season at 10-21. With the win the Pilgrims improve to 20-17 on the season and advance to the double-elimination portion of the NAC Tournament starting on Friday at Husson University.
The Pilgrims plated two runs in the first inning as LiAnn Linck (New Fairfield, Conn.) opened the game with a double and come around to score on a Beaver error. Elizabeth Harrigan (Weston, Conn.), who reached on the error, came around to score on a wild pitch.
NEC tacked on three more runs in the second inning as Olivia Stanley (Walpole, N.H.) led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Briel Lofrano (Plymouth, N.H.) and come around to score on a Taylor Belsito (Millbury, Mass.) triple. Leadoff hitter LiAnn Linck collected her second hit of the game with a two run home run over the left field fence plating Belsito.
Farmington got a run in Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine) opened the inning with a single, advanced to second on a Jillian Withee (Salem, Maine) walk and came around to score on a fielder's choice.
The Beavers threatened in the sixth inning as Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine) reached on an error and advance to third on a single from Christine Tovey (Sanford, Maine) but the NEC defense would get two groundouts to close out the inning.
The Beavers had a chance again in the seventh inning as Withee would reach on an error and come around to score on a single by Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine). Jones came around to score on a fielder's choice but again the NEC defense got the final outs.
Picking up the win on the mound for the Pilgrims was Gabrielle Timms (Clark Summit, Pa.) who
Leading the way for NEC at the plate was LiAnne Linck who finished with two extra base hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored. NEC's Taylor Belsito finished with a triple, a run batted in and a run scored.
Farmington's Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) led the way for the Beavers finishing with two hits.
Bartlett took the loss with seven hits allowed and a walk in two innings. Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine) worked four innings in relief with three walks and six strikeouts.
