FARMINGTON, Maine -- Colby College pitching limited the University of Maine at Farmington to six hits in the doubleheader as the Mules grabbed a sweep over the Beavers 10-1, 7-2 in non-conference softball action today at Prescott Field.
The Beavers (8-10) are scheduled to visit Green Mountain College Saturday at 3 p.m. for a North Atlantic Conference twinbill. The Mules (6-13) are scheduled to visit Thomas College Wednesday at 4 p.m. for a non-conference set.
In the first game, Erica Pulford (Glen Rock, N.J.) and Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ontario) each drove in three runs as Colby dispatched the Beavers 10-1.
Pulford and Wheeler each singled and doubled as part of the Mules' 14-hit output. Lauren Becker (Falls Church, Va.) slugged a pair of doubles for Colby, while Meaghan Lewia (Wells, Maine) and Lindsay Peterson (Fairfield, Conn.) each collected two singles.
Megan Michie (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) tossed a three-hitter in the win with 12 strikeouts.
Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) smacked a double and a solo home run for the Beavers, who also received a triple from Meghan Plant (Burlington, Vt.).
Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine) walked two and struck out five in the complete-game loss.
In the nightcap, the Mules notched the 7-2 six-inning victory after the game was called due to darkness.
Peterson and Katie Graichen (Arundel, Maine) each thumped a single and a double for Colby with Graichen knocking in two runs. Wheeler and Aimee Polimeno (North Woodstock, N.H.) each had a pair of hits.
Polimeno recorded the win with three hits allowed and six strikeouts over six innings.
Anna Piggott (Manchester, Conn.) went the distance in defeat with 10 hits allowed and a strikeout.
