Colonels charge past UMF, take twinbill

MILTON, Mass. -- Curry College copped a 7-2, 5-0 doubleheader sweep from the University of Maine at Farmington in non-conference softball action this afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field.

The Beavers (2-4) are scheduled to host Lyndon State College in their North Atlantic Conference and home opener on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Colonels moved to 13-7 on the season.

In the first game, the Colonels scored three times in both the third and fourth innings to claim the 7-2 opener win.

Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine) singled and doubled for UMF, while Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine) and Devin Fitzgerald (Casco, Maine) each had an RBI single.

Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine) was peppered with nine hits, while walking three and striking out five, in the complete-game loss.

Chelsey Munsey rapped an RBI single in both the third and fourth innings for Curry with Ariel LaRosa singling and doubling and Caitlin Luquet providing a double and two RBI.

Munsey notched the victory, twirling a four-hitter with two walks and a like number of strikeouts.

In the second game, Taylor Ahearn fired a three-hit shutout as Curry blanked the Beavers 5-0 to cap the sweep.

Ahearn struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) slugged a pair of doubles for UMF with Meghan Plant (Burlington, Vt.) also bagging a two-base hit.

Bartlett gave up six hits with four walks and four punchouts in defeat.

Luquet singled and doubled for the Colonels, who benefited from UMF errors to score a pair of runs and pushed across another two on wild pitches.
