Beavers bash their way past Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of Maine at Farmington slugged its way into the 2012 season with a 13-0, 15-1 sweep of Gordon College in non-conference softball action this afternoon.

The Beavers (2-0) are scheduled to visit Eastern Nazarene College Tuesday at 3 p.m. for a doubleheader. Live stats The Fighting Scots slipped to 4-8.

In the first game, Devin Fitzgerald (Casco, Maine) tripled home two runs and Michelle Cote (Arundel, Maine), Meaghan Donnell (Rochester, N.H.) and Casey Mull (Portland, Maine) each UMF jumped out to a 6-0 first-inning lead and rolled to the 13-0 five-inning win.

Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine) clubbed a three-run home run and drew a bases-loaded walk to lead the Beavers. UMF was the beneficiary of nine Gordon free passes. Mull was the lone repeat hitter in the win.

Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine) spun a two-hitter for the Beavers with one walk and nine strikeouts.

Kerry McPartlan had both hits for the Scots.

Skylar Bareford took the loss with five hits allowed, nine walks and one strikeout over 2.2 innings of work.

In the second game, Jillian Withee (Salem TWP, Maine) smacked two singles and a double with four RBI as UMF pounded out 16 hits in the 15-1 five-inning rout of the Scots.

Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) doubled twice and drove in three runs for the Beavers, who also received a single and a double each from Bartlett and Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine). Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine) was also a repeat hitter in the victory with a pair of singles and two RBI.

UMF scored 14 runs over the first three innings.

Bartlett picked up the victory, tossing a three-hitter with four strikeouts, but enduring seven walks.

Shannon Dodds singled twice for Gordon, which scraped together a run in the second on two walks and an error.
