Farmington, Maine - UMaine-Farmington's snow sports director, Scott Hoisington, has announced the hiring of Merit Bean as the assistant Nordic ski coach for the 2019-2020 season.
Bean joins the UMF staff after coaching both the Alpine and Nordic teams at Mt. Abram High School for over 30 years, where he has always enjoyed a successful teaching career. Bean's teams have won numerous conference and state championships. He has been the president of the Maine Ski Coaches Association for over 30 years and served as the liaison to the MPA Ski Committee. He was involved in the formation of the New England Nordic Ski Association and served as head of the Junior Committee, which also led him to be a part of the Athlete Development Committee.
"UMF Athletics is excited to invite Merit "Buzz" Bean to our coaching staff as the men's and women's Nordic coach. With over 30 years of coaching experience, Buzz will advance training and competitive knowledge to our team. We have had some preliminary meetings to discuss dryland, equipment, and competitive scheduling," said Hoisington. "Buzz and the athletes are enthusiastically preparing for the upcoming 2020 season, and look to build upon their performance of 2019 where they placed well at ECSC Regionals and USCSA Nationals."
