Field Hockey Sweeps Weekend to Start Season

BOSTON,MA – The UMaine-Farmington field hockey team swept the weekend series with a 10-1 victory over Wheelock College Saturday afternoon.

Carly Raymond put UMF on the board early with an unassisted goal 2:42 into the game. Chelsea Morley added unassisted goal five minutes later. Jenessa Talarico extended the lead after receiving a pass from Andrea Beaulieu. Raymond added another goal just before the end of the half to make it 4-0.

The Beavers momentum did not stop after intermission. Mara Balboni increased the margin with her first goal of the season on an assisted goal from Morley. The Beavers added five more goals in a 15 minute span when Delainey Kein, Morley for a second time, Susan Newkirk, Talarico for her second goal of the game, and Megan Hughes all found the back of the net. Hughes' first goal of the season came on a penalty stroke goal.

The Beavers outshot the Wildcats 46-2. Seven different players scored a goal for UMF, including three players with multiple goals.

Patty Smith goes to 2-0 on the season. Nicole Miranda defended the goal for the Wildcats and recorded 17 saves, including 12 in the second half. 

UMF looks to improve to 3-0 Wednesday afternoon when the Beavers host Southern Maine in the home opener. Game time is set at 4:30pm.
