FARMINGTON, Maine -- University of Maine at Farmington baseball (12-10, 5-7) swept the weekend and season series with Lyndon State (4-20, 1-11) on Sunday by winning both games of the doubleheader at Hippach Field. The Beavers shutout the Hornets, 2-0, in the first game and came back to win, 6-2, in the second game.
In the bottom of the second inning of the first game, Jordan Croteau (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) crushed a double into the left center gap to plate a run and give UMF an early 1-0 lead.
The advantage stayed the same until the Beavers tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning. Trevor Hisler (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan) started the two-out rally. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Hisler stole second to moved into scoring position, then Jimmy Neal (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) drove him home with a single back up the middle.
Kyle Peterson (Bethel, Maine/Telstar) pitched a four-hit gem to earn the complete game victory. Peterson fanned two Hornets while only facing 24 hitters in seven innings of work.
The Beavers had to play the role of comeback kids to start the second game. The Hornets took a 1-0 lead after getting a run in the top of the second, but UMF battled back with three runs in the third. Tom Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine Academy) lined a two-run double to left field and Grayson Beressi (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) followed with an RBI single two batters later.
Neal came through again in the fourth and the sixth innings with a pair of RBI hits, including a double in the sixth. The senior hit 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs on the afternoon.
Jory Humphrey (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy) also earned a complete game win. The senior surrendered one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts.
UMaine-Farmington takes a break from conference play on Tuesday with a nine-inning showdown with Bates College at Hippach Field.
