CASTLETON, Vt. – University of Maine at Farmington baseball (8-6, 1-3) dropped Saturday's doubleheader at Castleton University (10-9, 4-2) with a 5-1 North Atlantic Conference loss in the first game and 8-0 loss in the second game at Spartan Field.
UMF had plenty of chances in the first game, including two innings with the bases loaded and could not find a timely hit.
Grayson Beressi (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) drew a leadoff walk in the top of the second inning and moved into scoring position after stealing season. With one out in the inning, the Beavers left Beressi stranded at second after a pair of strikeouts.
In their next round of at-bats, Sean Cabaniss (Vassalboro, Maine/Erskine Academy) drove a one-out triple to right field but was left 90 feet from home plate after the Beavers were fanned by two more strikeouts.
Castleton made it hurt in the bottom of the third inning with the game's first two runs. The Spartans lined an RBI single and after a bases loaded hit-by-pitch, the Spartans held a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth and the fifth inning, the Beavers loaded the bases but two groundouts killed any momentum, including an inning-ending double play in the fourth.
UMF cut the deficit in half when Jimmy Parks (Springvale, Maine/Sanford) roped a two-out double down the left field line in the top of the sixth inning. Mark Leahy (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) started the rally with a single before hustling all the way from first on Parks' double.
The Spartans added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth with two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly.
In the second game, Castleton jumped out early with three runs in the first inning thanks to a leadoff home run and a two-run double. The Spartans spread five more runs across the next five innings.
UMaine-Farmington wraps up the weekend series at Castleton with a doubleheader on Sunday.
