Baseball sweeps Lyndon State, 3-2 and 7-3

FARMINGTON, Maine – University of Maine at Farmington freshman Ben Keene (Livermore, Maine/Spruce Mountain) singled home Dustin McCrossin (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Beavers to a 3-2 win over Lyndon State College, in game one of a North Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Thursday at Hippach Field.

UMaine-Farmington completed the sweep over Lyndon State with a 7-3 win over the Hornets in game two.

McCrossin got aboard with a lead-off single, and advanced to second on Tom Grady's (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine Academy) sacrifice bunt. Keene skied a fly ball into shallow left-center field, which fell amidst a crowd of Lyndon State fielders and allowed McCrossin to cross for the game-winning run.

Lyndon State took an early lead in the game with two unearned runs in the first inning, taking advantage of a Farmington fielding error at third and an RBI single by Michael Cartularo (Lyndonville, Vt.).

The Beavers knotted the game with two runs in the bottom of the third, on three singles and a wild pitch to score Brian Jenkins (Gorham, Maine/Gorham), followed by a ground out to short that allowed Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) to score.

UMF's Kyle Peterson (Bethel, Maine/Telstar) pitched effectively over nine innings for the complete game win, giving up nine hits but issuing no walks and allowing no earned runs with one strikeout. Lyndon State starter Sam Matthews fanned six Farmington batters but surrendered eight hits and three walks in the loss.

Winchenbach went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Beavers, while Ben Keene was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Dylan Newton (St. Albans, Vt.) tallied three hits for the Hornets.

In game two, Lyndon State again struck first with a three-run uprising on three hits, an RBI walk, a sacrifice fly, and a Farmington error.

UMaine-Farmington answered with one run in the bottom of the second, and tied the game at 3-3 with two runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Grady and Matt Woodbury (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence).

The Beavers tacked on the go-ahead run in the fifth. Jenkins opened the inning with a single to left-center, and scored on Wallingford's one-out single.

Farmington added three insurance runs in the sixth, keyed by Jenkins' two-out, two-run double to right field.

Jenkins finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Beavers with two runs scored and two RBI, while Jory Humphrey (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy) plated two runs on two hits. Farmington starter Casey Ashey (Searsport, Maine/Searsport) notched six strikeouts while holding Lyndon State to just two earned runs on five hits to earn the win.

Lyndon's Tyler Pelletier (St. Albans, Vt.) had a pair of hits to pace the Hornets.

UMaine-Farmington hosts New England College in an NAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 20, at 1:00 p.m. Lyndon State also returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Husson University in a conference twinbill.
