Farmington takes split against Castleton State

CASTLETON, Vt. – The University of Maine at Farmington broke its six-game winless streak while snapping Castleton State's six-game winning streak, taking a 10-1 win off the Spartans in game two of the teams' North Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Spartan Field.

Castleton State won the opening game of the twinbill, 8-2.

UMaine-Farmington opened the second game with singles by Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) and Colin Mello (Windham, Maine/Windham), with both eventually scoring on an error by Castleton's Cameron Curley at short to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.

The Beavers put three more runs on the board in the third. Back-to-back doubles by Brian Jenkins (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) and Mello plated one run, with a Dustin McCrossin (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) single and sacrifice bunt by Ethan Jean (Jackson, Maine/Mt. View) forcing two more runs across.

Castleton State posted one run in the top of the fourth, but Farmington answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Woodbury reached on an error and following a single, scored on another error to put UMF up 6-1. A sacrifice fly and a double scored two more runs, and the Beavers added their final run of the inning on an error by the Hoagland at third. 

Castleton was unable to score in the top of the sixth or the seventh and the Beavers tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth for the 10-1 final. 

Starter Ben Pearson (North Stonington, Conn./Wheeler) went six innings to earn the win for UMF, walking four but striking out seven batters. Ian McAlister (Dover, N.H./Marshwood, Maine) came on in the seventh and struck out one batter. Castleton State starter Ethan Hanson look the loss, going five innings and allowed nine runs, six earned while striking out four.

The Beavers recorded a season-high 12 hits, with Mello, McCrossin, and Jean each finishing with two hits. The Spartans, who committed a season-high four errors, were held to just five hits.

In the opener, Farmington was held to just four hits while Castleton State manufactured eight runs on six hits.

The Beavers got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first when Woodbury doubled home Winchenbach, who drew a lead-off walk.

UMFs slim held up through three innings. Castleton State plated four runs in the top of the fourth on three hits, a hit batsman, a sacrifice bunt, and a UMF error. The Spartans went on to add two runs in both the sixth and seventh, while the Beaver chalked up one final run in the seventh.

Farmington starter Joe Sullivan (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) allowed six runs, four earned, on four hits while striking out two Spartan batters, and was charged with the loss. Jory Humphrey (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine) finished out the sixth inning for Sullivan, while Sean Cabaniss (Vassalboro, Maine/Erskine) pitched the seventh and allowed two runs.

Castleton State starter Derek Osborne scattered four hits and allowed one earned run in the complete game victory.
