Winchenbach leads UMF past Colby Sawyer

FARMINGTON, Maine -- Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, Maine) drove in seven runs as the University of Maine at Farmington swept Colby-Sawyer College 11-4, 5-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division baseball action today at Hippach Field.

The Beavers (5-18 overall, 4-9 NEAC East) and Chargers (13-18, 6-12) are back at it on Sunday with a doubleheader tabbed for a noon start.

Winchenbach doubled twice and knocked in five runs in the opener and belted his first collegiate home run and earned the complete-game victory in the nightcap.

In the first game, the Beavers blew the game open with an eight-run second inning, featuring a two-run two-bagger by Winchenbach and a two-run triple by Brett Wallingford (Sanford, Maine), to grab the 11-4 win.

Matt Woodbury (Fairfield, Maine) singled twice and doubled with an RBI in the victory, while  Ben Pearson (North Stonington, Conn.) and Ben Yarian (South Berwick, Maine) each had an RBI single and Jack MacVane (Mechanic Falls, Maine) plated a run with a sacrifice fly. Winchenbach also had a bases-loaded double in the fifth.

Brandon Gallagher (North Yarmouth, Maine) scattered nine hits with a hit batter, a walk and five strikeouts in the victory.

Tyler Stotz (Amesbury, Mass.) smacked a three-run home run in the first inning and had an RBI single in the seventh to account for the Chargers' four runs. Greg Mehuron (Waitsfield, Vt.) singled three times in the loss with Andy Lapple (Newtown, Conn.) supplying a pair of hits and Jon Wylie (Middleboro, Mass.) doubling.

Ryan Gillan (Alton, N.H.) hurled four innings with 10 hits allowed in taking the loss.

In the second game, Winchenbach turned in the complete game with eight hits allowed, four walks and four strikeouts, and opened the scoring with a solo home run.

Winchenbach also had a sacrifice fly and scored on Wallingford's two-run single in the sixth that provided the Beavers insurance heading into the final frame.

Yarian and Colin Mello (Windham, Maine) each singled twice for UMF.

Matt Muldoon (Saugus, Mass.) singled, doubled and drove in a run for the Chargers, while Sean Gavin (Keene, N.H.) also had a pair of hits. Colby-Sawyer used Muldoon RBI double in the fifth and a Lapple pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the sixth to get the UMF lead down to 3-2 before Wallingford delivered in the sixth.

Brendan Harding (Medford, Mass.) went the distance in the loss with nine hits allowed, two walks and a strikeout.
