AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The University of Southern Maine baseball team scored nine times in the fifth inning as the Huskies rolled to a 12-1 win over the University of Maine at Farmington at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park this afternoon.
The game was called after seven innings due to the mercy rule.
The Beavers (1-5) are slated to take on Lindenwood University-Belleville on Friday at noon. USM improved to 7-7.
Leading 1-0 after four innings, the Huskies sent 14 batters to the plate in the fifth, banging out eight hits. Jake Glauser and John Carey each clubbed a two-run triple in the frame, while Tucker White added a two-run single.
Jack MacVane (Mechanic Falls, Maine) doubled for the Beavers and has hit safely in each of UMF's first six contests. The Beavers pushed across a run in the seventh with Ed Flaherty (Baileyville, Maine) scoring on a grounder by Zach Keene (Livermore, Maine).
Shane Waters (Mechanic Falls, Maine) was hit with the loss as the freshman lasted 4.2 innings with 13 hits allowed, four free passes and two strikeouts.
White turned in a four-hit day with three singles and a triple for the Huskies, who also received three singles from Matt Powers and two hits apiece from Carey, Glauser and David Ricker.
Ryan Yates hurled a complete game in the victory with nine hits allowed, two walks and a strikeout.
