LYNN, Mass. -- The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team opened its season by dropping a doubleheader to Fisher College 3-1, 6-2 in non-conference action at Frasier Field.
The Beavers (0-2) are headed to Florida to compete in the RussMatt Invitational. UMF is scheduled to face Lindenwood-Belleville Tuesday at noon for a doubleheader. Fisher improved to 6-15.
In the first game, Brandon Gallagher (North Yarmouth, Maine) was outdueled by the Falcons' Alex Fowler as Fisher took the 3-1 win.
Gallagher went the distance for UMF, scattering eight hits with a hit batter, two walks and two strikeouts.
Fowler allowed six hits in the win with a walk and five strikeouts.
Victor Lebron singled twice for the Falcons, while Davidson Peguero tripled and drove in a run, Michael Flynn doubled with an RBI and Jose Paulino added a run-scoring hit.
In the second game, Brett Remon's two-run double highlighted a four-run first inning for Fisher as the Falcons took a 6-2 win.
Colin Mello (Windham, Maine) went 3-for-3 with two singles and a double for UMF with Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, Maine) rapping a single and double. MacVane knocked in a run with a single in the fifth and Chris Whitney (Lisbon, Maine) drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh for the Beavers' scoring.
Remon's double capped Fisher's four-run first, which also featured an RBI double by Lebron and Peguero plating Lebron when he reached on a three-base error. Gary Lunetta and Ronald Rosario also clubbed a double each in the victory.
Casey Ashey (Searsport, Maine) took the loss for UMF. Ashey walked three and struck out three over four innings.
Mike Callahan walked two and struck out five over six innings to pick up the win for Fisher.
