Women’s lax keeps NEC at bay in 10-9 win

FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team built a five goal lead and then hung on for a 10-9 win over visiting New England College, Saturday afternoon at Prescott Field.

UMaine-Farmington (4-12, 2-3 NAC) led 10-5 with 16:25 left in the contest, following back-to-back goals by freshman Ayla Allen (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) and junior Molly Carbin (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough).

New England College scored four times the rest of the way, including twice in the final minute. The Pilgrims' final goal came from Gabriella Bigos (Branford, Conn.) with just 13 seconds left, but the Beavers' Mara Balboni (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) was awarded the draw control on a New England College foul and managed to carry the ball up field to run out the clock.

Allen finished with five goals and one assist for UMaine-Farmington, while Balboni and Carbin each had two goals. Maddi Kadnar (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) had the remaining Farmington goal. Chelsea Morley (York, Maine/York) was credited with a pair of assists.

Sarah Merrill (Dover. N.H.) and Jacquelyn Lane (Scituate, Mass.) each tallied two goals for New England College, while Bigos, Alexa Tardif (Hollis, N.H.), Kate Roberge (Essex, Vt.), Elizabeth Bois (Westbrook, Maine), and Meredith Merce (Ocean, N.J.) all had single markers for the Pilgrims.

Junior Hannah Goodenow (Freeport, Maine/Freeport) logged 12 saves over her 60 minutes in the UMaine-Farmington goal, while Pilgrim goalie Rebecca Harvey (Natick, Mass.) charted 11 saves.

UMaine-Farmington concludes its regular season on Sunday, April 21, at home against Green Mountain College, while New England College wraps up the regular season on Sunday at Thomas College in Waterville, Maine.
