FARMINGTON, Maine – University of Maine at Farmington sophomore Ibrahim Achekh deflected a Matt Potter throw-in past University of Maine at Presque Isle keeper Caleb Bragg-Grady early in the first overtime period, lifting the Beavers to a 1-0 win over the visiting Owls on Monday at Prescott Field.
The win was the first career victory for new Farmington head coach Tommy DiNuzzo, and marked the third straight season the Beavers have posted a win in their season opener.
UMaine-Farmington gained a throw-in to the left of the Owls' Bragg-Grady barely 30 seconds into OT, and Potter tossed the ball toward the corner of the 18-yard box. Achekh redirected the ball past a slow-developing UMPI defense, cinching the win for the Beavers.
UMaine-Presque Isle (1-3-0) outshot UMaine-Farmington (1-0-0) by a count of 13 to 11, with the Beavers holding a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Bragg-Grady and UMF keeper Derek Reilly each finished with four saves on the day.
UMaine-Farmington returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 11, when it hosts the University of New England at 4:00 p.m. on Prescott Field.
