HENNIKER, N.H. – The eighth-ranked University of Maine at Farmington men's lacrosse team was ousted from the North Atlantic Conference Tournament this afternoon as No. 1 New England College beat the Beavers 27-0 in quarterfinal action.
With the loss, the Beavers finished their season with an overall record of 2-11. With the win, the Pilgrims improve to 10-6 overall and are scheduled host the fourth seeded Maine Maritime Academy Mariners on Wednesday.
The Pilgrims jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the opening half and never look backed tacking on eight goals in both the second and third quarters en route to the eventual 27-0 victory. NEC finished the afternoon outshooting UMF 67-8 and held the 44-22 advantage in the ground ball column.
Mike Foley (Byfield, Mass.) had a great day on defense for the Beavers, recording three caused turnovers and eight ground balls, while David Cram (Northbridge, Maine) scooped six ground balls and forced two turnovers.
Leading the way for the Pilgrims was Steve Parsons (Townsend, Mass.) who netted five goals and had two assists, while Brian Gillis (North Vancouver, B.C.) tacked on five goals and an assist. NEC's James Putney (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) dished out a game-high five assists to go along with a goals, while Sam Freihofner (Scarsdale, N.Y.) tallied three goals and two assists.
UMF keeper Ben Altmaier (Wilton, Maine) finished with 11 saves in relief of starter Hunter Rowell (West Paris, Maine), who notched eight saves.
Picking up the win in net for NEC was Nick Aquaviva (Syracuse, N.Y.).
