GORHAM, Maine – Junior Eric Aguiar shot an opening-round 78 in rainy and windy conditions to lead the University of Maine at Farmington golf team on the first day of the 2017 Southern Maine Fall Classic hosted at the Gorham Country Club this weekend.
UMF is in seventh place in the nine-team field. Husson University leads all teams with an outstanding opening round team score of 286, St. Joseph's College (Maine) is in second with a score of 314. USM is in third (318), Wentworth is in fourth (319), followed by Bowdoin College in fifth with a score of 321. New England College finished with a 324, only two strokes ahead of the Beavers.
Shooting seven-over par on day one, Aguiar is in a four-way tie for 14th. Seniors Gavin Brickley and Michael Richard are both tied for 25th with each turning in a card of 82. Senior Trevor Hisler and sophomore Justin Rodrigue were the final two Beaver golfers competing as the scoring team. Hisler is tied for 33rd, while Rodrigue is tied for 36th with scores of 84 and 86 respectively.
Weather permitting UMaine-Farmington returns to action on Monday for the second and final round of the 2017 Southern Maine Fall Classic at Gorham Country Club, beginning at 10 a.m.
