AUBURNDALE, Florida – UMaine Farmington split a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader with the Thomas College Terriers on Monday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.
Game 1: UMaine-Farmington 9, Thomas 2
Game 2: Thomas 7, UMaine-Farmington 4
The Beavers opened the day with a 9-2 victory while the Terriers responded with a 7-4 win in game two. Following the two games, the Terriers now sit at 1-10 (1-1 NAC) on the season while the Beavers move to 1-2 (1-1 NAC).
Me.-Farmington 9, Thomas 2
The Terriers struck first in the bottom of the second as an RBI single from Isaiah Arana (Orlando, Fla.) plated Riley Simonetti (Minneapolis, Minn.).
The Beavers offense showed life in the top of the fourth they put two runners on with two outs. Derek Bowen hit an RBI single to score Jordan Croteau to tie the game up at 1-1. Mark Leahy followed with a double down the left field line to score Bowen and Chad Snowman to take a 3-1 lead.
Thomas pushed a run across in the bottom half of the inning as Rett Adams (Atlanta, Ga.) singled Jaicob Flores (Kingsville, Texas) in after he reached on a single of his own.
UMF pitcher Riley Chickering settled down after the fourth, holding the Terriers scoreless over the next two innings.
The Beavers added another run in the top of the sixth as Snowman smashed a solo homerun to left field to take a 4-2 lead. The offense continued in the seventh as the Beavers exploded for five runs highlighted by RBI singles from Trevor Hisler, Crouteau, and Snowman, finishing the scoring at 9-2.
Adams went 2-for-3 at the plate for Thomas with one RBI. Kyle Fletcher (Monmouth, Maine) threw six innings on the mound, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and striking out four.
Chickering threw six innings, allowing seven hits and two runs. Snowman had a big game for the Beavers going 3-for-4 with two RBI. He also pitched an inning in relief, giving up one hit.
Thomas 7, Me.-Farmington 4
After a scoreless first inning, the Beavers notched two runs in the top of the second. Hisler sent a single through the left side of the infield to score Tyler Flayhan and Nick Attaliades-Ryan for an early 2-0 lead.
Bowen and Croteau started the next inning with a pair of singles for UMF to get runners on. Terrier pitcher Cody Cousins (Wells, Maine) balked as Bowen took off for second base, allowing Croteau to score.
Beaver pitcher Nate Pushard kept the Terriers off balance for the first five innings, holding them scoreless with three hits.
The wheels began to fall off for UMF as the Terriers rallied with seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the sixth. Derek LeBlanc (Madison, Maine) singled to left field to score the first run. Andres Cabrera (Brooksville, Fla.) followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Fletcher.
Back-to-back singles from Alex Curtis (Monmouth, Maine) and Grant Corbett (Manchester, N.H.) brought in two more runs to take a 4-3 lead. Tristan Pena (Portland, Texas) plated another two runs on his double down the left field line while Hank Vinall dropped in an RBI single to right field.
With two outs in the final frame, Snowman ripped an RBI single to score Hisler to cut the lead down to three. Junior captain Matt Rutherford (Saco, Maine) struck out the next batter to finish the game at 7-4.
LeBlanc and Corbett each finished at 2-for-3 with an RBI. Cousins started on the mound, throwing three innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Rutherford earned the victory with four innings, two hits, one unearned run, and striking out four.
The Beavers were led by Hisler who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Pushard threw all six innings in the effort, giving up ten hits and seven runs.
The Terriers will be back in action on Tuesday, March 28 as they face Keuka at 9:00 a.m. at Chain of Lakes Park.
