Laflin paces women's basketball in win
University of Maine at Farmington forward Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) scored 31 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the Beavers' 82-70 North Atlantic Conference women's basketball win over Thomas College today.
Laflin tallied 21 points in the second half to allow the Beavers to hold off the Terriers to improve to 5-8 overall and 3-0 in the NAC with a trip to Husson University scheduled for Tuesday. The Terriers dropped to 2-9 (0-3).
Following Laflin, Jillian Ross (Belfast, ME) also contributed a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds off the bench and Amanda Byrne (Winslow, ME) added 12 points. The Beavers connected on 34 of 40 free throws (85 percent) in the contest with Laflin hitting 12 of 12, Byrne six of six and Ashley Busque (Belgrade, ME) five of six.
Mallorie Blakney led Thomas with 17 points with Kellie Martel chipping in 15 points.
The Terriers bolted out to a 12-5 lead over the opening 2:50 and maintained the advantage throughout the first 13 minutes of the opening half. With Thomas leading 26-20, the Beavers marched on a 13-0 stretch, including 10 of 11 from the charity stripe, to take a 33-26 lead with 6:18 until halftime. Farmington carried a 42-34 lead at intermission.
Behind Laflin's performance, the Beavers cruised out the break to roll to a 65-48 command over the opening 10 minutes. The Terriers chipped the lead down to nine points, but Farmington was able to hold off the hosts for the 82-70 win.
