Women's basketball ends skid at MMA

CASTINE -- The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team ended a five-game skid with a 59-56 North Atlantic Conference over Maine Maritime Academy this evening.

The Beavers (4-8 overall, 2-0 in the NAC) are scheduled to visit Thomas College on Saturday. Farmington defeated the Terriers 71-58 in Dearborn Gymnasium on Dec. 10. The Mariners slipped to 4-8 (0-1).

Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) registered 20 points, nine rebounds and four steals for Farmington, while Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) added 14 points. The Beavers took the lead for good with 53 seconds remaining in the game as Amanda Byrne (Winslow, ME) converted a three-point play for a 58-56 advantage.

Tatum Welch (Newport, ME) scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for MMA, while Ashley Tilton (Lubec, ME) contributed a career-high 13 points and Kelsi Eiane (Harpswell, ME) scored nine points and dished out four assists.

The Beavers got off to a quick start in the contest, bolting out to a 10-4 lead before the Lady Mariners inched back to within two at 10-8 on consecutive baskets by Tatum Welch. Farmington upped the lead to 13 points over the next eight minutes and with 4:47 left in the first half the Beavers led 27-14. MMA settled in on both ends, finishing off the half on a 7-0 run, and went into the half trailing 27-21.

The Beavers once again got off to a quick start to begin the second half and built a 10-point lead behind the efforts of Laflin, who scored six straight points. MMA didn't go away and made another comeback, scoring on four consecutive possessions to take the lead with just under five minute to go at 46-45. The lead changed hands two more times before the Beavers took the lead on Byrne's play.
