Women's basketball downed by USM
FARMINGTON -- The University of Southern Maine women's basketball team forced the University of Maine at Farmington into 23 turnovers and held the Beavers to 26.5 percent shooting as the Huskies won the Webber Energy Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday at Dearborn Gymnasium with a 62-41 victory over Farmington.
USM's Julie Paradis (Skowhegan, ME) was named the Tournament MVP. USM's Stacey Kent (Northwood, NH), Farmington's Sam Wiley (Lincolnville, ME), Farmington's Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME), Emerson's Bri Papa (Camillus, NY) and University of Maine at Presque Isle's Megan Korhonen (Littleton, ME) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
USM 62, Farmington 41
The Huskies -- ranked No. 17 in the nation in the d3hoops.com preseason poll -- improved to 2-0 with the championship game victory, while the Beavers slipped to 1-1. Farmington is scheduled to return to action on Nov. 28 against Thomas College in Dearborn Gymnasium.
Kent led USM with 13 points, while Josalee Danielli (New Gloucester, ME) added 12 points and Shannon Kynoch (South Burlington, VT) 10 points. The Huskies outscored the Beavers 34-6 in the paint and scored 30 points off turnovers.
Paradis, Kent and Danieli served as catalysts for a defense that totaled 15 steals and held the Beavers to 13 makes on 49 field goal attempts.
Amanda Byrne (Winslow, ME) paced Farmington with 12 points with Laflin pitching in eight points. Laflin also had four steals.
Emerson 73, UMPI 58
Trailing by a point at intermission, Emerson College opened the second half with a 17-5 run to take control of the consolation game and roll to a win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Sunday afternoon.
The Lions evened their record at 1-1, while the Owls dropped to 0-2.
Lauren Vassallo (Oxford, CT) tallied 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the win, while Maude Okrah (Rutland, MA) pitched in 18 points and Papa added 15 points.
UMPI took a 35-34 lead into intermission by the hot hand of Korhonen and the inside play of Erica Davis (Cumberland, ME). Korhonen scored 16 of her game-high 24 points in the opening half with five 3-pointers. Davis scored 11 of her 19 points in the opening frame.
