Women's basketball wins opener
FARMINGTON -- Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) tallied 20 points as the University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team opened its season with a 75-47 victory over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the opening round of the Webber Energy Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday at Dearborn Gymnasium.
The Beavers are scheduled to face Southern Maine ( a 79-65 winner over Emerson) in Sunday's final at 3 p.m. UMPI and Emerson are tabbed for a 1 p.m. start.
Farmington bolted out to an 11-0 lead and carried a 41-27 advantage into intermission. The lead continued to grow in the second half as the Beavers held UMPI to 28.6 percent shooting (8 for 28 in the second half).
Samantha Wiley (Lincolnville, ME) pitched in with 16 points in the victory, including a quartet of 3-pointers. Amanda Byrne (Winslow, ME), Ashley Busque (Belgrade, ME) and Brittany York (Strong, ME) each scored eight points as 10 players found the scoring column.
Megan Korhonen led all scorers with 23 points for the Owls, while Erica Davis chipped in 11 points.
In USM's victory, Angela Santa Fe scored 16 points and Nicole Paradis threw in 14 points, including a 3-for-3 performance from behind the arc in the win.
Josalee Danieli also got into double figures with 11 points for the Huskies.
Lindsay DeStefano paced Emerson with 17 points with Kathy Andrade adding 16 points.
