Women's basketball tripped at Thomas
WATERVILLE — The Thomas College women’s basketball team held on for the 70-67 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in North Atlantic Conference action this afternoon.
The Beavers slipped to 10-11 overall and 4-7 in the NAC with a trip to Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday. The Terriers improved to 9-10 (4-7).
Farmington was down by three with only seconds left in regulation and the Beavers got a clean look from three-point land but it did not go.
The Beavers grabbed their only lead of the game with six minutes left in the second half, but it was short lived as Thomas took it back on their next possession, never to relinquish it again.
Thomas led Farmington at halftime by the score of 35-26, helped by a strong first half performance from senior guard, Karen Demers (Sanford, ME), who recorded 13 points in the first half, while shooting 3-4 from three. Thomas’ high scorer was Lea McNary (Marlborough, CT) with 16 points. Amy Miles (Waldo, ME) and Cortney Barrett (Monmouth, ME) contributed 13 and 11 respectively. Demers finished the game with 15 points as McNary led Thomas in rebounds with eight.
Farmington shot a perfect 11 of 11 from the line in the second half and 16 of 19 on the game, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. Ashley Busque (Belgrade, ME) led Farmington with 15 points and eight rebounds. Erin Johnson (Bailey Island, ME) netted 12 points in a losing effort. Amanda Byrne (Winslow, ME) dished out 10 assists for the Beavers.
