Women's basketball downs Thomas
FARMINGTON -- Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team toppled Thomas College 69-58 in North Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday at Dearborn Gym.
The Beavers ran their record to 2-1 with the victory and are scheduled to travel to Williams College for the Williams Holiday Classic on Saturday and Sunday. The Terriers slipped to 2-1 and are slated to host the University of New England on Saturday.
Behind 12 points from Laflin, Farmington built a 37-29 lead heading into intermission. Baskets by Erin Johnson (Bailey Island, ME) and Amanda Byrne (Winslow, ME) pushed the advantage to 41-29 at the start of the second, but the Terriers persisted with a layup by Lea McNary (Marlborough, CT) with 12:29 left in the game cutting the lead to 43-39 and capping a 10-2 run.
Though never relinquished, the Farmington lead remained two points as late as 7:25 in the contest before the Beavers closed out the contest by outscoring Thomas 10-2 over the final 10 minutes of play for the victory.
Following Laflin, Johnson finished with 12 points and nine rebounds for Farmington with Byrne providing 10 points. Laflin also blocked three shots.
McNary posted a game-high 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds for the Terriers. Amy Miles (Waldo, ME) added 16 points in the loss with Karen Demers (Sanford, ME) ending up with 10 points.
