Laflin named NAC Player of the Year

FARMINGTON -- University of Maine at Farmington sophomore forward Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) was selected as the North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year in a vote by the league's women's basketball coaches as announced by the conference this afternoon.

Laflin, last season's NAC Rookie of the Year, led the league in scoring, was ranked second in field goal percentage and third in rebounding. The sophomore shot 50.0 percent from the floor while averaging 21.8 points and 9.4 rebounds for the Beavers.

Along with her Player of the Year honors, Laflin was named to the NAC First Team for the second straight season. She was honored as the NAC Player of the Week on three occasions this season.

Junior guard Amanda Byrne (Winslow, ME) earned NAC Honorable Mention honors. Byrne led the conference in assists with 5.93 per game and averaged more than two steals per game.

This is the first time Byrne has been honored by the NAC for her performance in women's basketball. In women's soccer, Byrne was named to the All-NAC First Team in 2006 and the All-NAC Second Team in 2005 and 2007.

Castleton head coach Tim Barrett was honored as NAC Coach of the Year. Castleton was also honored with the Team Sportsmanship Award. NAC all-conference selections are determined by a vote of the conference coaches.

Maine Maritime Academy freshman forward Tatum Welch was named the NAC Rookie of the Year.

The Beavers finished their season at 11-13 overall and 8-5 in the NAC. Farmington lost at Becker College 68-49 in the NAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday.
