Laflin shines in women's basketball win
JOHNSON, Vt. – Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) exploded for a career-high 36 points on 15-of-22 shooting from the floor and hauled down a game-high 12 rebounds to lead the University of Maine-Farmington to a 78-62 North Atlantic Conference women’s basketball victory.
Laflin's total was the highest by a Beaver since now-assistant coach Kari Simpson posted 41 points in an 84-61 win over Lasell on Feb. 24, 2006, in the NAC semifinals at Maine Maritime Academy.
The Beavers (6-7, 3-1 NAC) trailed by a point at the half and saw JSC open up the second half on an 11-4 run to lead by seven points. Farmington responded with a 15-4 run to take a four-point. The Badgers came back -- behind five consecutive points from Maureen Driscoll (Washington, VT) -- to take the lead for the final time at 50-49.
A Laflin jumper gave Farmington a 59-58 lead with 7:38 to play and was part of a 17-4 burst to finish the game to give the visitors the comfortable win.
The Beavers shot 54 percent from the floor on the night while holding Johnson State (6-7, 2-2 NAC) to 35 percent.
Ashley Busque (Belgrade, ME) scored 13 points and hit all three of her three-point attempts to supplement the Farmington offense.
Jenna Lewis (Middlebury, VT) scored 14 points and dished out four assists to pace Johnson State. Claudia Martineau (Washington, VT) added 12 points and seven rebounds while Staci Cutting (Rochester, VT) chipped in with 11 points and for assists.
Johnson State will host Thomas College at 4 p.m. on Saturday, while Farmington travels south to play at Castleton, also at 4 p.m.
