Women's basketball pulls away Elms
FARMINGTON -- University of Maine at Farmington used a 38-20 second half to distance itself from Elms College for a 60-43 North Atlantic Conference women's basketball victory tonight at Dearborn Gymnasium.
The Beavers ran their record to 7-9 overall and 4-3 in NAC competition. Farmington is scheduled to host Becker College Saturday at 4 p.m. The Blazers slipped to 5-10 (2-3) with a game at Thomas College on Saturday.
Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) scored 15 points to lead the Beavers, while Amanda Byrne (Winslow, ME) dished out 12 assists -- a single game best for NAC play so far the season.
Justine Tokas (Enfield, CT) tallied 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Blazers, who held a 23-22 edge at intermission on the strength of 43.8 percent (7-16) shooting from the field. Elms was also hurt by 25 turnovers, including nine steals by Farmington.
The contest was tied at 28-28 early in the second half before the Beavers ripped off a 9-0 stretch with a layup by Elizabeth Bell (Waterville, ME) with 14:08 left in the game giving Farmington a 37-28 lead.
The Blazers got as close as five points, but were held to only two field goals in the final 9:30 of the contest as the Beavers went on an 11-2 stretch to build a double-digit lead and close out the victory.
