Women's basketball bounced at Bowdoin
BRUNSWICK -- The Bowdoin College women's basketball team handed the University of Maine at Farmington its fifth straight loss with an 81-37 trouncing of the Beavers at Morrell Gymnasium today.
The Polar Bears improved to 8-4 and are scheduled to visit Maine Maritime Academy on Jan. 15, while the Beavers dropped to 3-7 with Plymouth State at home on Thursday.
Jill Anelauskas (Medfield, MA) tallied 19 points -- 15 in the first half in helping the Polar Bears to a 42-15 advantage at intermission. Maria Noucas (Portsmouth, NH) added 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Ten different Polar Bears got into the scoring column as the hosts shot 49.3 percent (33 of 67) from the field, while the Beavers were held to 26.9 percent (14-52). Bowdoin also held a 47-30 advantage on the boards with Anelauskas pulling down nine rebounds.
Amanda Byrne (Winslow, ME) paced the Beavers with 10 points, including three 3-pointers, while Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) chipped in eight points and team-high six rebounds and Brittany York (Strong, ME) also scored eight points.
The Polar Bears parlayed a pair of double-digit runs into a 42-15 command at intermission. After the Beavers took a 7-6 lead on a 3-pointer by Byrne 4:30 into the contest, Bowdoin pulled away on an 18-0 five-minute streak. The Polar Bears held Farmington to a lone free throw over the final 6:32 to use an 11-1 run to enter the locker room with a 27-point advantage.
Bowdoin expanded its advantage to 71-35 midway through the second half on a trio of trifectas by Noucas and held the Beavers scoreless over the final 5:50 to roll to the 81-37 victory.
