Women's basketball tripped up at Bates

LEWISTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team slipped to 3-6 with a 77-47 loss to Bates College at Memorial Gym today.

The Beavers -- scheduled to visit Bowdoin College Tuesday -- were led by Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) with 12 points, all in the first half, while Ashley Busque (Belgrade, ME) added nine points. Bates (7-3) won its fourth straight game.

Meg Coffin and Val Beckwith led 13 Bates College scorers with 14 points apiece. Coffin, playing in her first home game since 2006 after a year's layoff due to injury, shot 6-for-7 from the floor and added three rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Beckwith chipped in four rebounds and two steals for the Bobcats.

Sarah Barton dished out nine assists for the Bobcats in addition to eight points and three steals. Lauren Yanofsky added 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, while senior Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) came up with a season-high six steals in addition to seven points and three assists. Kellie Goodridge dished out a career-high five assists.

The Bobcats forced 27 Beaver turnovers and committed only 12, leading to a 35-10 advantage in points off of turnovers. Bates also held Farmington to 33.3 percent field goal shooting, including 2-for-15 (.133) behind the three-point arc.

Bates led the game wire to wire, with a fast-break layup by Beckwith to start the scoring just three seconds in. A layup by Coffin and a three-pointer by Barton quickly made it 7-0 in Bates' favor, and the Bobcats built a lead as high as 27 points (41-14) in the first half, but eight unanswered points by the Beavers chopped the lead down to 19, and Bates took a 43-24 lead into the break.

Bates bumped its lead from 19 points to 28 (56-28) in the first four minutes of the second half with a quick 13-4 run, featuring a pair of hoops by Coffin and five points from Kostakis, putting the game out of reach for good.
