2002-2003 Season Preview

The 2002-2003 UMaine-Farmington Women's Basketball team will combine a group of veterans and a large number of first-year players in its quest for a return trip to the NAIA National Tournament. A formidable schedule awaits UMF and fourth-year coach, Jamie Beaudoin (UMF, '97). The outlook is positive, however, as the Beavers return eight athletes from last year's team that finished the season with an 18-9 record. Add a strong group of first year players, and this squad will demonstrate improved depth and precision shooting from the perimeter.

The challenge for this team will be to fill the void left by point guard Rachel Bard. Bard's command of the court and defensive pressure were dominant in the Maine Athletic Conference and provided a stellar example to UMF's young guards who will take over the responsibilities this season.

Senior leadership will come from All Conference players Jocelyn Sawyer (Porter, ME) and Megan Woodcock (Farmington, ME) along with power forward Sam Hunt (Fairfield, ME). Sawyer averaged team high 14.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game last year while Woodcock averaged 12.4 points per game. Sawyer's range and ability to get to the free throw line make her a dangerous offensive threat for the Beavers. At six feet, Hunt gives the Beavers another inside presence. A strong rebounder with a soft touch around the hoop, Hunt should combine with Sawyer to provide the team with a very respectable inside combo during the upcoming campaign.

Joining Hunt and Sawyer up front will be sophomore standout Kate LaHaye (Belfast, ME). In her freshman season LaHaye averaged 8.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and also had one of the teams best field goal percentages with 49%. Other returning sophomores Sophia Stanley (Buxton, ME), Cheryl Kempton (Cumberland, ME), Molly Bean (Otisfield, ME) and Desirae Haines (Lincoln, ME) will be looked to for significant contributions both offensively and defensively. Kempton's free throw percentage of 79% and 7.3 points per game will give an added boost to the Beaver repertoire.

A big question for the Beavers will be the development of several first-year players. UMF will look to guards Lydia Coverdale (Malden, MA), Hannah Socoby (Houlton, ME), Meagan Cyr (Howland, ME), Mary Berry (Norridgwock, ME) and sophomore transfer Brandi Rideout (Mattawamkeag, ME) to make an early contribution in their careers. On the perimeter, Vanessa Ochs (Danbury, CT) will see court time as well.

The Beavers open the season at the University of Southern Maine tournament, with potential games against NCAA national championship contenders Southern Maine and Ithaca. UMF will play a tough non-conference schedule against some of the top teams on New England such as also Colby, Bates, Bowdoin, St. Joseph's, and the University of New England. UMF will also face traditional conference rivals Thomas College, UMaine-Machias, and UMaine-Presque Isle who return a wealth of talent.
