2001-2002 MAC Champions!!

Basketball Players Receive Honors

Three UMF basketball players have garnered post season recognition for their performances this season:

  • Rachel Bard, senior captain of the women's team, was named a NAIA Division II Women's Basketball All-American Scholar Athlete. 

  •  Bob Deetjen, a freshman on the men's basketball team, was named Rookie of the Year by the Maine College Basketball Coaches and Writers Association.  

  • Kate LaHaye, a freshman on the women's team was, selected to the All Rookie Team for the State of Maine.

Women's Basketball Closes Season With Solid Performance at National Tournament, Loses to #4 Team 49-63

The UMF women's basketball team was able to hold #4 Cardinal Stritch University 20 points under its scoring average but could not find a way to get past the 28-2 Wolves.  UMF was within 7 points in the second half behind the play of junior Jocelyn Sawyer (14 pts, 6-6 from the line), junior  Megan Woodcock (10 pts, 6 rebounds), freshman Kate LaHaye (8 pts, 7 rebounds) and senior Rachel Bard (7 pts, 4 assists).  The Beavers close the season with a 18-9 record.  With only one senior graduating UMF looks poised to be a top contender in the Sunrise Conference next year and hopes for a repeat appearance in the NAIA national tournament.

Internet Broadcast Information

In order to maximize the capacity of the internet broadcast of the women's basketball game, those people who are within the WUMF 100.5 FM  listening area (especially UMF campus personnel) are asked to listen on the radio versus on the internet.

The internet broadcast will be in Real Player format.  If you do not already have Real Player installed on your computer click on the link below to install.  This will take a few minutes so you might want to do it before game time.

Women's Basketball National Championship Game Radio/Internet Broadcast

The Department of Athletics is happy to announce that the UMF women's basketball national tournament game being played this Wednesday March 6th in Souix City, Iowa will be broadcast by WUMF 100.5 FM and on the Internet through links on the UMF Athletics web page.

This will be the first time a UMF athletic event is broadcast over the internet!

Separate links for audio or text versions of the game will be available.  Please note links for broadcasts will be available at 9:30am on Wednesday the 6th.

Women's Basketball Tournament Tentative Itinerary

Women's Basketball National Tournament Brackets Released
NAIA Women's Basketball Division II Brackets

The UMF women's basketball team has drawn #4 Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) (28-2) in the first round of the NAIA national tournament.  The game is scheduled for Wednesday March 6th at 9:30am EST, 8:30am CST.

UMF is making its third appearance in the tournament in 6 years.  The Beavers received an automatic bid to the tournament when it defeated nationally ranked St. Joseph's College 67-61 in the Maine Athletic Conference championship game on Monday February 25th.

The national tournament, a 7-day - 32-team affair, will take place from March 6th - 12th in Souix City, Iowa.  Continue to check here for updates as they will be posted as soon as we receive information.

Anyone interested in wishing the team well is welcome to come to Dearborn Gymnasium at 6pm on Sunday March 2nd.  This will not be an official send off as the team is actually departing Farmington very late Sunday night.

Women's Basketball Wins MAC Title!!

UMF (18-8) defeated conference number one St. Joseph's College (22-2) 67-61 at the Augusta Civic Center to capture its 2nd MAC title in 5 years.  Junior Megan Woodcock led a balanced attack with 16 points, followed by freshman Kate LaHaye's 13, junior Jocelyn Sawyer's 11 and senior Rachel Bard's 10.  The win propels the Beavers into the NAIA National Tournament which will begin on March 6th in Souix City, Iowa.

Women's Basketball Advances To MAC Championship Game

The University of Maine at Farmington defeated Thomas College 66-56 at the Augusta Civic Center in the semi-finals of the Maine Athletic Conference Tournament. With the win the Beavers improve to 17-8 and will play in their first MAC Championship game in three years.

The Beavers will play St. Joseph's College on Monday at the Augusta Civic Center with the winner advancing to the NAIA National Tournament.  Tip off is slated for 5:30 PM.

Women's Basketball Defeats Husson, 69-57, Advances to MAC Final Four

UMF was led by junior Megan Woodcock who chipped in 19 points on its way to another MAC Final Four appearance.  Other scorers for the Beavers were Jocelyn Sawyer with 17 points and Rachel Bard with 10.  UMF will play Thomas College in the first round.  Game time is set for 1pm at the Augusta Civic Center on Sunday February 24th..

Kempton: Rookie of the Week Honorable Mention

Women's Basketball player Cheryl Kempton was placed on the MAC Rookie of the Week Honorable Mention list today for her average of 10 points per game last week.

Women's Basketball Wins Last Regular Season Game

UMF defeated UMaine Presque Isle 79-53 to close out the regular season with a record of 15-8 overall and 8-4 in the MAC.  The Beavers were led by Desirae Haines with 15 points followed by Megan Woodcock with 13 and Samantha Hunt and Rachel Bard with 12 points each.  As the conference playoffs begin, UMF will host #6 Husson College on Wednesday February 20th at 7pm.  A win will propel them into the MAC final four tournament held at the Augusta Civic Center on Sunday February 24th and Monday February 25th.

Women's Basketball Defeats UMaine Fort Kent, 65-51

UMF used a well balanced attack in winning the first game in a back to back weekend defeating UMFK.  Freshman Cheryl Kempton led a host of double digit scorers with 13 including 3 three's, followed by Jocelyn Sawyer with 12, and Megan Woodcock and Rachel Bard with 11 each.  UMF faces UMaine Presque Isle tomorrow in the last game of the season.

Women's Basketball Defeated By Bowdoin

UMF freshmen led the way as the Beavers took on a 20-1 Bowdoin team that is ranked 4th in the NCAA Division III. Cheryl Kempton scored a team high 14 points on 4-4 shooting from three point range, Amanda Pepin added 12 points and Kate LaHaye contributed 10 points and 5 rebounds.  Jocelyn Sawyer and Desirae Haines each grabbed 6 rebounds for the Beavers.  UMF will close out the regular season on the road this weekend when they take on UMaine Fort Kent on Friday and UMaine Presque Isle on Saturday.

Women's Basketball Defeats Machias, 76-58

UMF pulled away in the second half outscoring UMaine Machias 42-24 behind the play of junior forward Jocelyn Sawyer.  Sawyer scored 22 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked 3 shots in the win.  Junior Megan Woodcock chipped in 13 points and 7 rebounds while senior Rachel Bard added 8 points.  UMF improves to 13-7 overall and 6-4 in the MAC.  With only 2 conference games remaining the Beavers are hoping to host a first round playoff game on the 20th of February.  Next up UMF will be at Bowdoin College on Tuesday the 12th at 5:30pm.

Kate LaHaye Named Rookie of the Week by MWBCA

UMF freshman forward Kate LaHaye, from Belfast, averaged 14.0 points and 8.7 rebounds as the Beavers went 2-1 in conference play.  She was accurate from all over, shooting 60 percent (15-for-25) from the floor and 55 percent (6-for-11) from beyond the 3-point arc.  She added six steals, four assists and four blocks for good measure. 

Women's Basketball Drives Past UMaine Fort Kent, 76-35

UMF recorded its second win in two days on Sunday as they defeated UMaine Fort Kent.  Freshman Kate LaHaye led the Beavers with 21 points including 2 three's and 10 rebounds.  Junior Jocelyn Sawyer contributed 18 points and went 6-7 from the line.  UMF's record improves to 12-7 overall and 5-4 in the MAC.  The Beavers will next face UMaine Machias on Saturday February 9th.

Women's Basketball Defeats UMaine Presque Isle, 83-55

UMF earned its fourth conference win on Saturday defeating visiting UMPI.  The Beavers received standout performances from juniors Jocelyn Sawyer and Megan Woodcock.  Sawyer recorded 22 points, 6 rebounds and went 4-5 from the line.  Woodcock led all scorers with 23 points including 3 three pointers.  Freshmen Desirae Haines and Kate LaHaye contributed 11 and 8 rebounds respectively.

***Women's Basketball Game at Colby College Cancelled***

The women's basketball game scheduled for Thursday February 7th at 7pm has been cancelled due to a scheduling error as a result of a rule that exists for Colby's athletic conference (NESCAC).

Women's Basketball Loses in Double Overtime, 104-96

UMF was unable to contain a hot shooting Thomas team yesterday as they suffered a tough overtime loss.  UMF was led by junior Megan Woodcock with 18 points, followed by junior Jocelyn Sawyer with 17, freshman Cheryl Kempton with 15 and freshman Kate LaHaye with 14 (3 three pointers).  UMF drops to 10-7 overall and 3-4 in the MAC.  The Beavers will host back to back games this weekend when they take on UMaine Presque Isle on Saturday at 1pm and UMaine Fort Kent on Sunday at 12pm.

Desirae Haines Named MAC Rookie of the Week, Sawyer Earns Player of the Week Honorable Mention

UMF freshman Desirae Haines of Lincoln averaged 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week.  She shot 53 percent from the floor, 100% from the line and made 80% of her three point attempts.  Jocelyn Sawyer a junior from Porter averaged 16 points per game and 11.5 rebounds in the two victories.

Women's Basketball Blows Past Lyndon State, 84-49

UMF received a balanced performance from all players in capturing its 10th win of the season.  Junior Jocelyn Sawyer led all scorers with 21 points and 12 rebounds.  Freshman Desirae Haines chipped in 16 points, including going 3-3 from three point range, and added 6 rebounds and 4 steals.  Junior Megan Woodcock contributed 11 points, freshman Kate LaHaye added 7 rebounds and 3 steals, while freshman Molly Bean grabbed 6 boards.  Senior Rachel Bard dealt out 4 assists and made 4 steals.  UMF is gearing up for 3 conference games next week, facing Thomas College in Waterville on Wednesday the 30th and UMaine Presque Isle and UMaine Fort Kent in Farmington on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Women's Basketball Defeats Husson College, 65-45

UMF was led by junior Megan Woodcock's 15 points and 5 assists as the cruised to their third MAC victory of the season.  Freshman Kate LaHaye added 12 points and junior Jocelyn Sawyer added 11 points and 10 rebounds.  UMF improves to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the MAC.  The Beavers return to action on Saturday January 26 when they host Lyndon State College at 2pm.

Women's Basketball Suffers Defeat, 62-67

UMF, led by junior Jocelyn Sawyer's 13 points, was unable to overcome a 15 point deficit in today's loss to conference leader St. Joseph's College.  Freshmen Kate LaHaye and Amanda Pepin each added eight points in the effort.  UMF falls to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in the MAC.  The Beavers return to conference action on Tuesday January 22nd when they travel to Husson College.

Megan Woodcock Recognized By ECAC and MWBCA

Junior guard Megan Woodcock was named  Co-Player of the Week for the week of January 6-13 by the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association and selected to the Division III, New England, Player of the Week Honor Roll by the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association..  Woodcock scored 36 points in a pair of UMF victories.  On Saturday at Castleton State College, she scored 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 4-for-8 from 3-point land.  For the week Woodcock made 59 percent (13 of 22) of her field goal attempts and was 7 of 14 from beyond the arc.

UMaine Machias Slips Past Women's Basketball, 55-56, Woodcock Named Player of the Week

UMF suffered its first loss since coming back from the holiday break today as UMaine Machias edged out the Beavers 55-56.  UMF was led by MAC Player of the Week Megan Woodcock who chipped in 19 points.  Jocelyn Sawyer and Cheryl Kempton each added 7 points, Sawyer also contributed 5 blocks.  Senior captain Rachel Bard recorded 9 steals and 5 assists.  UMF's record drops to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.  The Beavers return to action on Saturday January 19th when they host conference number one St. Joseph's College at 1pm.

Women's Basketball Gets Second Win in Two Days

Megan Woodcock continued her hot streak Saturday as she led the Beavers to a 73-44 win over the College of St. Joseph's (VT).  Woodcock recorded a team high 13 points, Jocelyn Sawyer and Dorice Reitchel each added 11 and Rachel Bard chipped in with 7.  UMF will play its third game in four days tomorrow when they host UMaine Machias in their first conference game since the holiday break.

Women's Basketball Defeats Castleton State, 69-59

Junior guard Megan Woodcock hit four three pointers on her way to a team high 25 points in UMF's 7th win of the season.  Junior forward Jocelyn Sawyer added 18 points.  UMF's record improves to 7-4 overall.  The Beavers return to conference play on Monday January 14th when they host UMaine Machias at 2pm.

Jocelyn Sawyer Named Conference Player of the Week

Junior Jocelyn Sawyer was named MAC Player of the Week today for her performance in Saturday's game versus New England College.  Sawyer scored 23 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and hit 9 of 9 free throws in the 63-50 win.

Women's Basketball Defeats New England College, 63-50

In the Beaver's first game back after the Christmas Break, UMF was led by junior forward Jocelyn Sawyer who chipped in 23 points, 16 rebounds and was 9 for 9 from the charity stripe.  Other contributors to UMF's 6th win of the season were: Megan Woodcock with 14 points, Rachel Bard with 7 assists, 5 steals and 7 rebounds and freshman Kate LaHaye grabbed 8 boards.  UMF will travel to Castleton State next weekend to play on Friday and Saturday.

UNE Too Much for Women's Basketball

UMF fell victim to high turnovers and low rebounds in a tough loss to host UNE last night.  UMF was able to cut the UNE lead to 10 with 3 and a half minutes to play, but the Nor'easters held on to capture the 71-57 victory.  UMF was led by freshmen guard Amanda Pepin with 19 points (four three pointers) and forward Kate LaHaye with 15 points on 6-7 shooting.  The Beavers return to action on January 5th when they host New England College at 2pm.

Women's Basketball Falls Short In Second Half Comeback Bid, 70-74

UMF rallied from a 17 point deficit in the second half to within one point of the visiting Bobcats from Bates College, but that was as close to Bates as they would get.  Clutch shooting from Bates held off a strong push by UMF in the last 5 minutes of the game.  Junior Jocelyn Sawyer led UMF with 16 points 10 of which came on free throws.  Freshman Kate LaHaye recorded her second double double of her college career with 15 points and a team high 17 rebounds.  Junior Samantha Hunt chipped in 14 points.  The Beavers will travel to the University of New England on Monday December 10th for the last game of the semester.  UMF returns to action after the Christmas break when the host New England College on Saturday January 5th at 2pm.

Women's Basketball Defeats Husson, 76-65

The Beavers were able to withstand a strong Husson attack in the second half to get the victory.  UMF entered the second half with a 19 point lead after shooting 65 percent from the floor in the first half.  UMF played well defensively in the second half, but hit only two field goals.  Jocelyn Sawyer led all scorers with 18 points and 9 rebounds, she was followed by Megan Woodcock with 16 points.  Rachel Bard, Amanda Pepin and Cheryl Kempton each contributed 11 points.  Bard added 6 assists and Kempton drained two three's. UMF will face Bates College at home on Saturday at 1:00 and will end the semester with a trip to Biddeford where they will face UNE on December 10.

Kempton Receives Honors

Freshman Cheryl Kempton was named Rookie of the Week by the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association and honorable mention Rookie of the Week by the Maine Athletic Conference for her performances last week.  Kempton, from Cumberland, ME averaged 13 points and 4 rebounds per game in a 3-0 week.

Women's Basketball Wins Johnson State Tournament

The University of Maine at Farmington improved its record to 4-2 with a 68-64 come from behind victory over Johnson St College at the Badger Classic.  The Beavers trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half and went into the half time intermission trailing 41-33.  UMF took the lead for good with 8:40 remaining a Kate LaHaye lay up and held Johnson St to only seven points over the last seven minutes of the second half.  Tournament MVP, Jocelyn Sawyer scored 14 second half points in route to 20 points for the game to go along with 9 rebounds and 2 blocks.  All Tournament selection Megan Woodcock scored 13 points, 6 rebounds and dished out 5 assists. Rachel Bard had a team high 8 assists and 3 steals.  The Beavers return to action Wednesday night as they host MAC rival Husson College at 5:30 PM.

Women's Basketball Gets By Notre Dame, 68-60

Junior Jocelyn Sawyer's solid performance of  18 points, 13 rebounds and 6 blocks led the Beavers past Notre Dame College in the first game of the Johnson State Tournament yesterday.  Freshman Cheryl Kempton contributed 16 points including 4 three pointers and Desirae Haines added 10 points.  UMF will play in the championship game today at 2pm and will return to home action Wednesday December 5th when they host MAC rival Husson College at 5:30pm.

Women's Basketball Gets Win Over Thomas, 64-51

Freshman, forward Cheryl Kempton came off the bench to score 14 points including three 3 pointers to lead the Beavers past visiting conference rival Thomas College.  Junior, Jocelyn Sawyer chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds and senior Rachel Bard contributed 10 points, 7 assists and 2 steals.  UMF will play in the Johnson State tournament this weekend, facing Notre Dame College at 5pm on Saturday, with the second game of the tournament to be announced, on Sunday.  The Beavers return to conference action next Wednesday as they host Husson College at 5:30pm.

Women's Basketball Loses to St. Joseph's, 59-74

UMF came out strong in its first conference game of the season and was within five points of the defending MAC champions at halftime.  Jocelyn Sawyer led the Beavers with 11pts and Megan Woodcock, playing in her first game since coming off a MAC championship in soccer, chipped in 9pts.  UMF returns to action on Wednesday November 28th hosting Thomas College at 5:30pm.
